A school gym is not a home gym. Year 10 students loading racks between classes, five days a week, forty weeks a year. Consumer-grade equipment fails inside the first term. Pads split, cables fray, bearings seize — and nobody answers the phone when you call the warranty number.
Commercial-grade plate-loaded machines are designed for exactly this usage pattern. Sealed bearings rated for 100,000+ cycles.3mm and 4mm steel tube frames that do not flex under maximum load. Upholstery rated for institutional use — not domestic foam wrapped in PVC.
EN ISO 20957compliance matters for more than the spec sheet. It demonstrates duty of care to students, satisfies Ofsted facility inspection criteria, and protects the school’s insurance position. Consumer-grade equipment has no testing documentation — when asked, the supplier shrugs.
A gym that looks and feels professional encourages participation beyond the sporty kids. That matters for PE departments trying to hit engagement targets and for S&C coaches building programmes that students actually want to attend.
Pre-approved up to £250,000 under the DfE school equipment lease scheme.
The Department for Education school equipment lease scheme allows maintained schools, academies and multi-academy trusts to lease gym equipment up to £250,000 without full governing body approval. HARTIS equipment qualifies — plate-loaded machines, racks, benches and storage are all eligible asset classes.
The lease is structured as revenue expenditure, not capital — it comes out of the annual budget rather than requiring a capital bid. Terms run 3 to 5 years through approved lease brokers. Monthly payments replace the upfront cost.
We supply the compliance pack for the lease application: EN ISO 20957 documentation, declaration of conformity, full specification sheets and commercial invoice. The business manager does not have to chase paperwork from three suppliers — one pack, one manufacturer, one invoice.
Room and facility considerations
Minimum 80 m² for a basic S&C room. 150 m² supports a full year-group rotation of 30 students. Ceiling height 2.8 m minimum for overhead press and pull-up bars.
20 mm rubber interlocking tile over concrete slab. Protects the sub-floor, reduces noise transmission to classrooms below, and provides stable footing. Sport England guidance recommends interlocking tiles for school weight rooms.
Mechanical ventilation to BB101 standard. A strength room with 20 students generates significant heat and moisture — natural ventilation alone is not sufficient for the air-change rates required.
Clear sightlines from the entrance. No blind corners. Equipment layout must allow the supervising teacher to see every station from one position. We design the layout with this constraint.
Equipment condition is inspected. EN ISO 20957 documentation, maintenance logs, and a current risk assessment demonstrate duty of care. We supply the documentation pack at delivery.
At least one wheelchair-accessible station. Selectorised machines with fine weight increments support inclusive PE delivery. Adjustable benches accommodate a range of body sizes.
